The Homeless

I picked up a newsletter from the local homeless organization we donate to and on the cover was a homeless white woman sitting on the sidewalk with her 2 year old draped over her legs napping. Something about this picture unleashed a torrent of emotions for the plight of people everywhere suffering from homelessness, hunger, and mental disease. I think I was particularly affected because of my child on the way in April. I pictured my son suffering because he didn’t have enough to eat or a safe place to sleep and it made me cry off and on for a good 5 minutes.

If we can all learn to use our resources more efficiently and give everyone equal access to healthcare, education, the resources, and help they need, we can have a better society. The big question is how to do this. Certainly sustainability has something to do with it. By having no impact on our environment and having a close-loop industrial system, we’ll use our resources many times more efficiently. This will create a surplus of goods and services that can be used to make sure people have equal access to food, clothing, shelter, healthcare, education, and meaningful work. Plus, they’ll have a planet to enjoy in the future.
